Food systems, climate denialism and environmental activism in the Global South under COVID-19

In PerspectiveIn our first debate on political ecology, Pedro Magalhães (Brazil) discusses with Boaventura Monjane (Mozambique), Sabrina Fernandes (Brazil), and Saker El Nour (Egypt) from the International Research Group on Authoritarianism and Counter-Strategies (IRGAC) on food systems, environmental activism and climate denialism in the Global South

The debate focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in these often-precarious systems of food production and distribution, on the climate politics of authoritarian regimes and on possible solutions assembled around the notion of food sovereignty. We also explore some responses to the climate crisis in different regional contexts, unraveling the discourses regarding sustainability that are mobilized by governments and grassroots organizations, and ask how these influence local dynamics of resistance and popular mobilization.
